Four words are chanted through the halls of the Visual Concepts studio in Northern California this year: Fun, polish, intuitiveness, và attitude. Things are certainly changing at VC and after a brief & incredibly vague look at NBA 2K4, it's clear big changes are in store for some of Sega Sports' staple franchises.

On the visual side of things, VC intends to add better presentation overall. More specifically, there will be more cut-scenes of the bench và coaches and possibly the crowd as well. No word yet on whether they'll be able to lớn have Jack Haley sitting in a suit on the sidelines high-fiving players and cheering loudly.

Specular highlighting has been added lớn jerseys & shorts lớn accentuate the wrinkles and give sầu an even more realistic appearance. It's quite impressive to watch the light crawl across the jersey as you spin the camera around. VC plans to lớn have sầu every player's face in the game, that's over 450 real faces! And those players will look mighty real thanks lớn the addition of four extra bones (can you guess where those bones are located?), brvà new player models that offer a more athletic looking toàn thân, and a snazzy new gravity system.

The gravity system gives players proper weight & makes dunks & jump shots look just lượt thích the real thing. Truly, the dunks look phenomenal this year. The same dunk as last year looks completely different (& by different, I mean better) than in NBA 2K3. You also get a slew of new animations, including a cool hanging wrist jump shot pose a la Jordan in his last Championship game. All around NBA 2K4 a better looking game even this far from its fall release on PS2 & Xbox.

Franchise Mode now supports multiple players và historic players will be able to be drafted into lớn your Franchise (a feature Sega wanted for last year, but couldn't implement in time). Toss in AI initiated trades & you're as fluent in the new NBA 2K4 Franchise mode as I am. Certainly there are more changes, which will be revealed in the coming months.

The 2K series' reliance on the same miễn phí throw implementation (squeezing both triggers for Xbox or moving both analog sticks on PS2) has been given a new wrinkle. Now, not only must you line up the shot as before, but you must also time the shot right for a harder or softer throw. Yup, the free throw system is getting harder và more complex.

All of these things were fine and dandy và really pretty much expected of the lakiểm tra in the series. But once I saw the game in motion, I knew VC was making some radical gameplay changes. For one thing, there's now quite noticeable ball trails when you pass or shoot the ball. There's also a ton more flare.

Ballers throw over-the-shoulder and behind-the-bachồng passes, along with a myriad of other fancy moves. And all of this is said to be at the player's complete control. Taking a page from NBA Street Vol. 2, the lathử nghiệm 2K has a give-in-go system where you pass the ball but retain full control of the player without the orange. And then there was... the mystery bar.

Each player has a bar -- a colored meter -- beneath them at all times. This bar does not stand for stamimãng cầu or an overall player rating. That much I know. Somehow fouls in NBA 2K4 are a way to lớn ding you for "not playing the game right." There will be flagrant fouls this year, but of course they also tie inlớn the bizarre little bar.

No details have been given about how defense will work in NBA 2K4, only that the bar is important và that it will be great. But there's no way lớn judge potential greatness here, because all that's available is a big, fat, question mark in regards to much of the gameplay changes.

It's not just this bar that remains an enigma. One-on-one match-ups are said to lớn be "inspired by Virtua Fighter." My only hope is that it doesn't play like Shaq-Fu.
